Required documents and conditions

For the Norway residence permit (UDI Application portal; the skilled worker and student checklists personalised for Japanese citizens), prepare copies of all used pages of the passport. If you hand in the application in Norway, you normally only need to show the passport and hand in the copies; when applying from abroad, both the passport and the copies are normally handed in. Documents not in Norwegian or English must be translated into Norwegian or English by an authorised translator (the translation must include the translator's name and the date).

On the photo axis, the UDI photo policy page states that no photo needs to be brought when applying (the police or foreign service mission takes a picture at the appointment), while the skilled worker and student checklists for Japanese citizens list one recent passport-sized photo against a white background when applying from abroad. This guide presents both official statements with their sources and does not adjudicate between them. Check the current official checklist.

Check that every used page is included before you submit; the tool only assembles the pages into a PDF. The 20MB PDF cap is the tool's implementation limit, not an official value.

What to check before you submit

Page counts, colours, and merge policies are not stated by the official source. Confirm the current conditions in the official portal before submission.

Frequently asked questions

Which pages must be copied?

The official wording is "passport and copy of all used pages in passport". Only used pages are in scope — blank pages and the front and back cover are not included. This is a separate rule from Denmark's requirement, which covers all pages including the covers.

What about the file format and size cap?

The official public pages (the checklists and the "Send documents to UDI" page) publish no file format, numeric size cap, or page count (constraints inside the Application portal can only be confirmed after login). The tool's 20MB cap is not an official value; it is the tool's own implementation limit, and the PDF packaging is likewise this tool's own configuration (the official pages do not name a format).

Do I need a face photo for the application?

The UDI photo policy page states that no photo needs to be brought when applying and that the police or foreign service mission takes a picture at the appointment. The skilled worker and student checklists for Japanese citizens, however, list one recent passport-sized photo when applying from abroad. Because the two official statements coexist, this guide does not adjudicate; check the current official checklist. This tool prepares the document copy only and does not produce a face photo file.
