Preparing a face photo

Face photo requirements

The Slovakia National visa (Type D) follows the document list on the central mzv.sk National visa page and is submitted as a paper set at the mission (in-person submission). The list is jurisdiction-independent, and the same photo wording (full-face, colour, ICAO-conform, 3 x 3.5 cm) repeats across every pathway on the page. The official page lists no mission-specific additions for Japan.

No official digital photo upload rule exists; printing and bringing the photo remain the applicant's own actions (the tool prepares the print photo only). Separately, the Slovakia residence permit (cudzinecká polícia) abolished the photo attachment obligation in the amendment effective 2025-07-01 (on-site biometric capture); this page covers only the National visa print photo.

What to check before you submit

The phrase “passport-size” alone does not set a fixed value such as 35×45 mm. In the Tool, enter the dimensions shown by the current application guidance.

Frequently asked questions

What photo does the Slovakia National Visa (Type D) application require?

The mzv.sk National visa page states verbatim: “a full-face colour photograph, conform to ICAO standards, 3 x 3.5 cm”. This means a 30 mm wide by 35 mm high photo, and the page confirms that it must be full-face and in colour. The official page does not state the background colour, photo age, or numeric face-geometry rules; it delegates the definition of “ICAO standards” to a linked PDF. The document list uses the singular phrase “a ... photograph” but sets no numeric photo count. The application is submitted as a paper document set at a Slovak mission; no official digital-upload rule is published. You print and submit the photo yourself; the Tool only prepares it.

Can I use a 35×45 mm photo as is?

Not for this National visa route. 35×45 mm is a common value in Schengen C short-stay visa guidance, while the official National visa (Type D) page states a different size: “3 x 3.5 cm” = 30×35 mm. The Slovakia Schengen C photo dimension is not officially published, and the National visa value is not applied to it. Third-party claims such as “30×35 mm with a 25 mm head and a light background”, “70–80% face coverage”, “six months”, or “120 KB” do not appear on the central mzv.sk page and are not official requirements. BLS figures, where circulated, are third-party guidance for a Schengen C route, not official National visa requirements. Enter the dimensions stated by the guidance for the route you are submitting to.
