Preparing a face photo

Face photo requirements

For a Portugal national visa (stays over 90 days — temporary stay, residency, CPLP, youth mobility, and other purposes), the MFA document pages list two printed photographs as a common document. Japan is covered solely by the Embassy of Portugal in Tokyo, with no external provider.

Submission is in person at the embassy counter (no mailing or proxy). Printing and bringing the photos remain the applicant's own actions (the tool prepares the print photo only). The decree-level plain background (fundo liso) does not specify a colour. Where the Embassy of Portugal in Tokyo mentions a white background in its general requirements, that is a route-specific mission instruction.

What to check before you submit

The phrase “passport-size” alone does not set a fixed value such as 35×45 mm. In the Tool, enter the dimensions shown by the current application guidance.

From creation to submission

  • Keep the application guidance available and enter the output type and dimensions you have confirmed.
  • No face guide is shown for values the official guidance does not specify.
  • After editing and review, confirm the accepted format and conditions in the application portal before submitting.

Frequently asked questions

How many photos are required for a Portugal National Visa application?

The Portugal MFA national visa document pages for temporary stay, residency, and CPLP require "2 Photos, even, passport type, recent and in good condition to identify the applicant (1 for this form)". Decree-Regulation 84/2007 Art. 12.º(1)(a) independently confirms "Duas fotografias iguais, tipo passe, ... a cores e fundo liso, atuais e com boas condições de identificação do requerente" — two identical passport-type photos, in colour, with a plain background, and recent. This is one common count of two across the purpose guidance. Follow the application guidance for your purpose and use the Tool to prepare the printed photos; print and bring them yourself.

Can I use a 35×45 mm photo as is?

The MFA pages, the Embassy of Portugal in Tokyo page, the route-specific checklist, and Decree-Regulation 84/2007 do not publish a photo dimension in millimetres; this absence is confirmed across all four official layers. 35×45 mm is an adopted value for the separate Schengen C (short-stay) procedure, not an official National Visa requirement. Enter the dimension stated in your application guidance in the Tool.
